Preserving
the Historic Road Conference

Preserving the Historic Road is the leading conference dedicated
to the identification, preservation and management of historic
roads. The eighth biennial conference will be held in Indianapolis,
Indiana. Long known as the Crossroads State, Indiana has notable
historic roads and scenic byway corridors including the Historic
National Road, the Ohio River Scenic Byway, Indiana Historic
Pathways, the Lincoln Highway, the Whitewater Canal, the Dixie
Highway and the Michigan Road. Founded in 1821, Indianapolis
was designed by Alexander Ralston, an apprentice of Pierre Charles
L'Enfant. Nicknamed the Circle City, Indianapolis is centered
on historic Monument Circle. In the 1900s, as a part of the
City Beautiful movement, the noted landscape architect George
Kessler created a plan for parklands and boulevards throughout
the City. Today, after forty years of progressive planning,
you are invited to experience the historic sites, canal, public
spaces and museums of downtown Indianapolis-one of the most
dynamic and walkable cities in the United States.

mission of the Center for Preservation Leadership is to strengthen
and support a network of committed and informed preservation
leaders by providing the tools and resources needed to carry
out preservation activities in their own communities. One way
the Center accomplishes this mission is by providing a number
of leadership training programs designed to increase the capacity
of organizations and agencies working in the field of historic
preservation. These programs include Preservation
Leadership Training (PLT), three Preservation
Leadership Training/ Advanced (PLT/A) programs, the Better
Boards series, and Community

Main Streets Conference

National Main Streets Conference is the only commercial district
revitalization educational and networking event that blends
economic development, community revitalization, and historic
preservation. Originally called National Town Meeting, this
conference was developed to support the ever-growing Main Street
Network of Main Street board members, volunteers, and executive
directors and today supports planners, architects, public officials,
BID/MID staff, and others working in the revitalization field.
The Conference offers tutorials on the Main Street Four-Point
Approach™, a proven strategy for comprehensive commercial
district revitalization; as well as related topics including
und raising, organizational development, marketing, business
assistance, planning, volunteer recruitment, visioning, advocacy,

Preservation Institute (NPI) offers a series of training seminars
for the management, development, and preservation of historic,
cultural, and environmental resources related to historic preservation
and cultural resource management. Seminar descriptions and agendas

This year, NPI will offer "Preservation
Planning and Policy Development for Historic Roads"
to be held in three separate locations. The seminar will explore
current tools and techniques for the identification, preservation,
and management of historic roads. Learn how to apply transportation
policies to historic roads, balance safety and function with
historic preservation objectives, and build awareness and new
constituencies for the legacy of highway design in the United
States.

only statewide non-profit historic preservation education, advocacy
and membership organization. It is the mission of the California
Preservation Foundation to ensure that California's rich and

environment and quality of life. The Foundation sponsors the
annual California Preservation Conference, which will be held

year Preservation Oklahoma teams with the Oklahoma State Historical
Society to host a conference for professionals and volunteers
interested in historic preservation. This year's conference
theme is "Our Sense of Place: Oklahoma's 25th Annual Statewide
Preservation Conference". The three concurrent tracks of
sessions will focus on the buildings, structures, sites, districts,
objects, and landscapes that provide a sense of orientation;
a sense of place to Oklahomans. A session on the Route 66
Economic Impact Study is planned.
