Photos 1 and 2: Aftermath of the Johnstown Flood.

The flood snapped large trees like sticks and turned them into battering rams that could pierce wall. Shattered buildings were thrown into piles three stories high, completely filling some blocks.

Questions for Photos 1 and 2

1. Why do you think some buildings survived the flood while others were completely destroyed?

2. How might the people in the photos have been feeling at the time these images were taken?

* The photos on this screen have a resolution of 72 dots per inch (dpi), and therefore will print poorly. You can obtain a high quality version of Photo 1 and Photo 2, but be aware that each file will take as much as 40 seconds to load with a 28.8K modem.
