1. Identify the route of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. Name the two cities at the east and west ends of the railroad. Using the scale provided, calculate the distance of the Allegheny Portage Railroad.

2. What obstacles would have prevented a canal from being built across the state?

3. Identify the route of the Pennsylvania Main Line of Public Works, the system of canals and connecting railroads that was built across Pennsylvania. How were obstacles overcome by the canal engineers?
