U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
CREDITS AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTThis bulletin derives from Robert Z. Melnick's seminal work, Cultural Landscapes: Rural Historic Districts in the National Park Service, which was published by the National Park Service in 1984, and has guided a number of excellent rural surveys within the National Park Service and State historic preservation programs. We acknowledge the contributions of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation, American Society of Landscape Architects, several State Historic Preservation Offices, several colleges and universities, and local preservation groups in making possible various forums for the exchange of information about rural preservation.
Many individuals representing State historic preservation programs, National Park Service, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, universities and colleges, professional organizations, and private consultants have been involved in the preservation of historic rural landscapes, have shared their thoughts and experiences during the past several years, and have commented on drafts of this bulletin. For their valuable contributions to this bulletin, special recognition goes to Marilyn Fedelchak, Rural Heritage Coordinator of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the following individuals within the National Park Service: Carol Shull, Keeper of the National Register, and John Knoerl, Archeologist of the National Register Branch, Interagency Resources Division; Richard Waldbauer of the Archeological Assistance Division; and Cathy Gilbert, Historical Landscape Architect of the Pacific Northwest Regional Office.
