XI. SUMMARYThe National Register Criteria for Evaluation encourage the listing of a property that has achieved significance within the past 50 years only if it is of exceptional importance or if it is a contributing part of a National Register eligible district. While that language sounds restrictive, the criteria are general principles that are applied in specific contexts. The criteria discussion of recently significant properties is not intended to bar consideration of many resources that can be judged unusually important in the recent development of American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, or culture. However, the criteria and National Register program require that nominations for such properties demonstrate that sufficient historical perspective and scholarly, comparative analysis exist to justify the claim of exceptional importance.
