NHL Theme Study on Voting Rights Begins

The National Park Service has begun a National Historic Landmarks (NHL) theme study on Racial Discrimination in Voting Rights as part of a Congressionally authorized multi-state study of civil rights sites. Civil rights related sites that may be nationally significant are being identified through NHL studies on the aspects of the great 1960s civil rights acts that include voting, public accommodations (study drafted in 2003), equal employment, and housing (future studies). Scholars chosen by the Organization of American Historians to prepare the voting rights context are Steven F. Lawson of Rutgers University for African American history; Neil Foley of the University of Texas for Latino and Asian history; and Peter Iverson of Arizona State University for Native American history. A draft of the context and registration guidelines for the voting rights study is scheduled for SHPO, THPO, and FPO review in July. In the meantime, if you have knowledge of any stories or properties that should be considered as part of the voting rights study, or have any specific questions, please e-mail the study’s project manager at susan_salvatore@contractor.nps.gov.
