On Wednesday, September 26, 2001, the United States Senate unanimously designated October as Family History Month. Join the National Register of Historic Places as we commemorate the ongoing efforts to research the diverse stories of family heritage and discover the impact families have made in American history. In honor of the American family, the National Register of Historic Places has placed "Celebrate Family History Month" online at www.cr.nps.gov/nr/feature/family Featured are several of the National Register's Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) lesson plans focusing on family heritage, including "the Battle of Prairie Grove: Civilian Recollections of the Civil War" and the Taft House. "Growing into Public Service: William Howard Taft's Boyhood Home" visits the home of the only man to serve the country both as president and chief justice, and introduces the rest of his public service-oriented family. The Discover our Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary series highlights many properties that reflect the impact families have made in American history, including "The Amana Colonies." Learn more about this historic communal, utopian society established by several families of German-speaking European settlers in Iowa who belonged to a religious group known as the Community of True Inspiration. The "Aboard the Underground Railroad" Travel Itinerary features historic sites associated with Harriet Tubman, a former African-American slave who later returned south to rescue several of her family members, and the family of Harriet Beecher Stowe, the influential antislavery author who wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. The "Learn More" section features links to professional genealogical associations and institutions that aid in public research. More than 80 million Americans are believed to be actively searching for more information about their ancestors.
