The National Register of Historic Places' Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) presents the newest online lesson plan,The Battle of Stones River: The Soldiers' Story. Suitable for both students and educators, "The Battle of Stones River: The Soldiers' Story", presents the bloody Civil War battle fought among the rocky cedar glades near the town of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on December 31, 1862, between Union General William Rosecrans and his 43,400-man army against Confederate General General Braxton Bragg's 37,000-man army. Found at www.cr.nps.gov/nr/twhp, this lesson plan explores the battle that claimed 23,000 casualties--it was the second bloodiest battle fought west of the Appalachians during the Civil War. Although both sides claimed victory, The bloody Civil War battle fought among the rocky cedar glades near the town of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, left an indelible imprint on the lives of many a soldier and his family. The battle at Stones River claimed The Stones River National Battlefield stands today as a silent reminder of those individuals who lost their lives there. The lesson plan comes complete with historical readings, maps, visual images, and questions for students.
