Recreation, Leisure, and Tourism in America: To better understand the continuing need for Americans to explore new places, new forms of recreation, and escape everyday life, Teaching with Historic Places posted on the web the following complete lesson plans that study the history of recreation, leisure time, and tourism in America. Created by National Park Service interpreters, preservation professionals, and educators, these lessons are free and ready for immediate classroom use by students in history and social studies classes. The lesson plans include historic readings, visual images, and activities for educators and students alike. These lesson plans deal with the great American idea of the summer vacation and travel, putting leisure travel into a historic context. Among the interesting lesson plans presented are Roadside Attractions: Follow the highways of the 1920s and 1930s, exploring the whimsical, extravagant architecture that came with American auto culture. Have you ever bought your milk while inside a milk bottle? Paid for your gas inside a teapot or a sea shell? Slept in a wigwam? Climbed on a dinosaur? Have you compared your foot size with that of Paul Bunyan? These and many more such activities attracted hometowners and tourists alike as millions of Americans took to the road when the automobile revolutionized American life. Other lesson plans include Bryce Canyon National Park: Hoodoos Cast Their Spell, which explores the natural wonders of this once remote area in Utah and learn how it became a popular tourist destination in the early 20th century and finally a national park. The Invention Factory: Thomas Edison's Laboratories allows the online viewer to tour Edison's West Orange complex where his determination to invent things to improve the lives of people spurred products that still affect our lives and leisure time today. These and five other online lesson plans, with a sixth to be soon added, explore America's history of recreational vacations in all their variety.
