New and Improved NRIS Forms Software 2.0 Now Available

NRIS Forms allows you to fill out National Register nomination forms on a personal computer, print them out for signature, and make database files for submission to the National Register. Version 2.0, available at www.nr.nps.gov/nrdown1.htm, is a revision to the original National Register of Historic Places (NRIS) Microsoft Access-based Forms program and includes new features and improvements. All known software bugs have been fixed. The program should now be considered revised as noted below.

New Features:
Installation is now Web-driven using a software installation program (Wise).

NRIS Forms is now agnostic with respect to the configuration of your computer so there should be no installation nightmares. There are well known problems running different versions of Microsoft Access and/or Microsoft Access runtime versions on the same computer. NPS has licensed the Sagekey technology to deliver to you a product that will run on your computer irrespective of what version(s) of Microsoft Access you may or may not have.

Users have correctly pointed out the limitations of Microsoft Access when it comes to producing complex, highly formatted documents often characteristic of National Register documentation. When you cut and paste between any word processing program and Access, you lose basic formatting such as bold or italics that may be essential for clarity's sake. To remedy this, the installation program now provides you with word processing continuation sheet templates in both Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect which you may attach.

Improvements Include:
How to complete the NR Registration Form refers to the need to enter many categories such as area of significance in their order of predominance. Upon production of a form the Access program then resorted these same categories alphabetically. You are now allowed to enter ranking within these categories to preserve the order you choose.

Tighter standards are imposed upon NRIS Forms fonts and the sequence in which the Access program produces continuation sheets.

Native American tribes are now entered free form to accommodate variations in spelling and the addition of new tribes.
