The National Register of Historic Places is pleased to promote awareness of and appreciation for the historical accomplishments of African Americans during African America History Month. Please go to our featured website honoring African Americans and join the National Register in paying powerful tribute to the spirit of African Americans. As part of the celebration, this site showcases historic properties listed in the National Register, National Register publications, and National Park units commemorating the events and people, the designs and achievements that help illustrate African American contributions to American history. Among the sites are historic places found in the National Register Travel Itineraries that convey courageous and inspiring stories of African Americans from their perseverance along the Underground Railroad to freedoms gained during their struggle for civil rights, from Southeastern Louisiana's Africa American places to Chicago's Black Metropolis. Links to the National Register's Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) program offers a series of five ready-to-use lesson plans, available for free downloading, that examine different aspects of African American history. Titles include:Chicago's Black Metropolis: Understanding History Through a Historic Place and Equality for African Americans Iron Hill School: An African-American One-Room School. Links to newly Designated National Historic Landmarks, including properties associated with Harriet Tubman and desegregation in Public Education Sites, including the Daisy Bates House and Howard University properties, are also included. National Register sites highlighted include: The USS Alligator, a now sunken schooner that once patrolled the west coast of Africa on anti-slavery trade duty and helped in the founding of the African nation of Liberia.
