The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.

Cypress Gardens
in Winter Haven, Florida
Cypress Gardens has local and statewide significance under Criteria A and B in the area of Entertainment/Recreation as one most widely recognized tourist attractions in Florida's history, and for its association with its creator and promoter, Richard Downing (Dick) Pope, who was often called the "Father of Florida Tourism." Cypress Gardens was built on the shores of Lake Eloise near Winter Haven as botanical gardens by Pope and his wife Julie, and opened as one of Florida's first theme parks in 1936. Besides its botanical gardens, the park became well known for its water skiing shows on Lake Eloise and its role in the development of water skiing as a major sport.

National Register Landscape Initiative

The National Park Service has initiated a study of the nomination of landscapes to the National Register of Historic Places.  The effort is called the “National Register Landscape Initiative” (NRLI). The first task of the NRLI will be an examination of current practices and existing guidance, with the end goal of establishing best practice guidance and increasing the attention paid to landscapes in nominations. The National Register of Historic Places has accepted new technologies over the past few years including digital photographs and alternatives to the paper USGS maps. We are now accepting the nomination form in pdf format. Please read this guidance on how to submit a nomination on disk before sending. And let us know if you have any comments. Read more . . .

July 19th GIS webinar recording: Using GIS for Latitude & Longitude Coordinates for NR

This webinar covered the use of on-line mapping programs to determine latitude and longitude coordinates in lieu of UTM references for National Register nominations. The webinar will provide step-by-step guidance on the use of Google Earth, BING Maps, ArcGIS Explorer, and a true ArcGIS application.
