Matchless Mine, Lake County, Colorado

The Matchless Mine is significant for its contribution to the social history of Leadville and the state of Colorado, for its contributions made to industry, architecture, and engineering in the field mining, and for its potential to yield more information about the era of the silver boom in Leadville at the turn of the 19th century. The mine was also made famous by the legend of “Baby Doe” and Horace Tabor, former owners of the mine, whose scandalous rise from rags to riches ended with their penniless demise.
