Point of Rocks Historic Transportation Corridor, Mineral County, Montana
The corridor retains physical remnants of two important transportation networks that served the rugged back-country areas of Mineral County, Montana during the late nineteenth (Mullan Road-1860) and early twentieth centuries (Milwaukee Road Railroad-1908). The Mullan Road was the result of John Mullan's tireless efforts to complete a military route linking Fort Benton to Fort Walla Walla and served as the primary, if rudimentary, transportation corridor for early military mining, commercial and settlement interests in the region over an extended period until surpassed by the rail networks. Few such well-defined remnants of the Mullen Road have been identified. Taken together, the road corridor and the adjacent railroad corridor offer a unique picture of evolving transportation development in the region.
