| The Houston Historic District is significant under Criterion A for association with Commerce and Community Planning and Development and Criterion C for association with Architecture. Resources within the district reflect the community's historical development in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Architecturally, buildings within the district are typical of popular styles of the period. The town was founded in 1836 but prospered after two railroads built lines to it in 1904 and 1905. The railroad spurred commercial growth in the community and a subsequent demand for housing and community services. |
Properties are listed in the National Register of Historic Places under four criteria: A, B, C, and D. For information on what these criterion are and how they are applied, please see our Bulletin on How to Apply the National Register Criteria
