Potomac (Potowmack) Canal Historic District, VA: The district consists of the remains of an impressively engineered canal built between 1796 and 1802.
Located beside the falls of the Potomac near Washington, D.C., this district includes the ruins of Matildaville,
a town which grew up during the canal's operation as well as small industrial structures that used the canal's
water power. The interstate negotiations that led to its building helped spur the Constitutional Convention.
