National Historic Landmarks Program

When you have been given instructions to proceed with Researching a Site and writing an NHL nomination, the NHL Program will notify several interested parties that this process has begun.

• The owner(s) of the property

• The highest elected local official of the jurisdiction in which the property is located such as a mayor or a county official

• The State Historic Preservation Officer for the state in which the property is located; the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the tribe, or the Federal Preservation Officer for the appropriate federal agency

• The two United States Senators for the state in which the property is located

• The U.S. House of Representatives Member for the district in which the property is located

These parties are also sent a copy of the draft nomination during a subsequent notification process.

You will be asked to assist in the gathering of the correct names and contact information for these parties.

If there are other interested parties such as historical societies, friends groups, preservation organizations, or researchers that you believe would be interested in this designation please provide that information to the NHL staff also.

Old Main, Vassar College, NY: Constructed between 1861-65, this is one of the earliest and most successful expressions of the Second Empire style in the United States, and one of the few remaining grand-scale examples of the style. It was the original building for Vassar College, the first college in the United States offering women an education similar to that available to men at Yale and Harvard.
