National Historic Landmarks Program

These criteria are codified in The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The full listing of the criteria can be found in 36 CFR Part 65.

The next few pages will explain the six criteria the NHL Program uses and how these criteria are applied.

Please note: While you may use more than one criterion for a nomination, using one criterion is usually sufficient. Nominations that use multiple criteria are not stronger or better nominations than those which use only one criterion.

Dealey Plaza Historic District, TX: Built in 1934-40, Dealey Plaza serves as Dallas' western gateway. It was the focus of civic pride prior to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. The Dealey Plaza Historic District is one of only two extant presidential assassination sites in the United States.
