Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Building (Brown Building), NY

On March 25, 1911, a fire swept through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, resulting in the deaths of 146 workers, most of them young women. Trapped behind locked doors or crowds struggling to escape, many workers suffocated or were burned to death; over a third of the factory's workers leapt to their deaths from the windows of the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors of this building. The tragedy shocked the nation and galvanized the labor movement to press for progressive factory legislation.
