How to Use The Images |
This drawing was part of an advertisement for the Chicago Bee. Anthony Overton founded the newspaper for "civic and racial improvement and development" and to promote black business. Aiming for national circulation, Overton wanted a distinctive building in the latest architectural style to house the Bee. Erecting such an elaborate structure at 3647-3655 S. State Street between 1929 and 1931 was also a show of confidence in the old center of Black Metropolis. 1) How is this building different from the Overton Hygienic Building? 2) How would designing the building in the popular Art Deco style support the purposes and philosophy of Overton and his newspaper? 3) How are the Chicago Bee and its new building connected to the engine of progress theme? * The image on the screen has a resolution of 72 dots per inch (dpi), and therefore will print poorly.
