Photo 1 shows a section of stone sleepers from the railroad, still intact and in place at the park.

Questions for Photo 1

1. What was the purpose of the items shown? (Refer back to Reading 2 if necessary.)

2. How do you think the rails were attached to the stone blocks? Are there any clues on the blocks themselves to indicate this?

2. Why do you think stone blocks may have been used on the railroad in the first place? List some possible advantages and disadvantages for using stone versus wood ties. Look at the photo for clues to problems in using stone sleepers.
