Parkwide
Inventory YEAR 1
Field Photos Year1
Sitka National Historical Park Parkwide Inventory,
Year 1
The first year of archeological inventory by Midwest
Archeological Center Archeologists at SITK took place
from July 24 - August 13, 2005. The field team incorporated
three crews (shovel test, metal detection, and geophysical)
each working more-or-less independently of one another
with overall coordination of the project by MWAC Archeologist
William J. Hunt, Jr., who served as Project Director.
The shovel test team, led by Hunt, had three crew members:
GS-4 Archeological Technician James Craig, GS-2 Archeological
Technician Shaun Griffin, and GS-2 Archeological Technician
Jesse Marquez-Hopson. The objective of this team was
to non-randomly test as much of the park as possible
to locate prehistoric through historic sites. The metal
detection crew included MWAC Archeologist Douglas Scott,
VIP (Forest Service Archeologist) Chris Adams, and Santa
Fe-based NPS Archeologist Charles Haecker. This crew
had as its primary goal to identify the area of the
1804 battleground with ancillary goals being identification
of as many other historical sites as possible throughout
the park. The geophysical team was essentially one person,
Steve De Vore, who was occasionally assisted by VIPs
and individuals normally assigned to the shovel test
team. De Vore's primary goal was to identify anomalies
potentially associated with the location Kiks.adi Tlingit
fortified village.
On Tuesday, August 9, 2005, Midwest Archeological Center
archeologists and crew with the Sitka NHP Parkwide Archeological
Project and Sitka NHP Park Historian Krisitin Griffin
were interviewed in the field by Melissa Marconi-Wensil
for KCAW, Raven (Sitka public) Radio. A 5minute audio
file of this interview may be downloaded
