70. Evaluative Archeological Excavations at 12PR597,
an Early Archaic Site, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Porter County,
Indiana.
Stadler, Scott
In the course of investigating properties at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore that had structures scheduled for removal in order to restore the landscape to a more native habitat, prehistoric artifacts were recovered from Tract 39-113. As a result, limited test excavations were conducted at the tract, which resulted in 3 Early Archaic projectile points, 5 lithic tool fragments, numerous pieces of lithic debitage, and fire-cracked rock being discovered. Since only one other site of this early age has been located within the Lakeshore boundary, this site has the potential to provide important information concerning Early Archaic adaptations in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore area and should be preserved.
