Midwest Archeological Center personnel and local Colorado Archaeological
Society and National Park Service volunteers completed a second field
season of pedestrian inventory and evaluation along the shoreline of Blue
Mesa Lake in Curecanti National Recreation Area, Colorado.
Conducted in the spring of 1992 at the time of the lowest lake level, the
inventory covered approximately 164 ha (406 ac), and focused on land
along the south shore of Blue Mesa on either side of Middle Bridge between
Sapinero and Cebolla Creek. Investigations also took place at the west
edge of the Elk Creek Campground, in Kezar Ravine, and at 5GN164 a short
distance west of Iola. Inventory personnel examined eroding shoreline
between the 2,292 m (7,520 ft) maximum pool level and the 2,282 m (7,485
ft) contour. and also inventoried adjacent hillsides above the erosion
zone.
Eight previously unrecorded prehistoric and historic archeological sites
were identified in 1992. and the boundaries of four other known sites were
revised following their reexamination.
