21. Archeological Shovel Test Survey at the Earthlore
Environmental Education Center, Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation
Area, Summit County, Ohio.
Hunt, William J. Jr.
In August 1991, an archeological shovel test survey was conducted at the
Campus of the Earthlore Environmental Education Center (EEC) in Cuyahoga
Valley National Recreation Area (CUVA) in response to proposed large-scale
development construction. No archeological investigations had been done in
the construction zone prior to this survey. A total of 443 shovel tests in
11.8 acres of the Campus resulted in the identification of 2 prehistoric
sites and 1 multicomponent prehistoric and historic site. Management
recommendations are to avoid these resources if possible. Those threatened
by planned construction should be further tested to ascertain their
integrity, scientific significance, interpretive potential and/or
stabilization and conservation needs, and determine their eligibility for
nomination to the National Register.
Due to the sensitive nature
of this subject this report is
