The Midwest Archeological Center conducted an intensive survey of a
182-acre tract of land in the East Unit of Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore. The survey was initiated in response to plans to develop a
campground at that locality. Fifteen archeological sites were recorded
during the 1989 survey. Evaluative testing was conducted at 12 of these
during 1989 and 1990. Potentially significant subsurface archeological
deposits were identified at eight of these sites.
Survey data indicates that this area of the Calumet Dune ridge was
frequently occupied during the Woodland prehistoric period. Sites in the
project area appear to have been used for short-term, intermittent
occupations aimed at exploiting nearby wetlands, The relatively high
density of archeological sites in the study area is probably representative
of similar topographic/ecological areas of Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore.
