6. Agate Fossil Beds National Monument: Archeological Investigations at Site 25SX163.

Introduction

Site 25SX163 was recorded during a 1975 archeological survey of Agate Fossil Beds National Monument by the University of Nebraska Department of Anthropology (Kay 1975). Survey records indicate that the site is located at and in the area immediately surrounding the interim visitor center. Cultural material recovered during the 1975 survey consisted of one biface fragment, four small pottery sherds including two rim sherds and two body sherds, a few flakes of lithic debris including one of obsidian, and a few bone fragments. Kay (1975:27) suggests a possible Dismal River (prehistoric Plains Apache)(Strong 1935:212-217; Gunnerson 1960:141) cultural affiliation for the site on the basis of the small pottery sample but indicates that this assignation is tentative. Kay (1975:appendix) recommends that further research be conducted at the site to determine its significance for possible nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

During the week of August 18-24, 1976, test excavations were conducted by the Midwest Archeological Center to delineate the extent of the site and to evaluate its National Register significance. The following report discusses the results of the field work and laboratory analysis of the materials that were recovered.
