Archeological investigations were conducted at Mound City Group National Monument during the week of September 13-17, 1982. The primary purpose of the study was to inventory and evaluate archeological resources which might be present in a 49.83 acre tract to the north of the National Monument boundary. This tract of land is owned by the Federal government and managed by the General Services Administration, and was identified as surplus property. Limited archeological reconnaissance of this tract had indicated that archeological remains are present (Richner 1981). The field investigations were initiated with the objective of determining the number, location and significance of archeological remains within the tract, with particular attention to the relationship of those archeological resources to the earthworks at the nearby Mound City Group.

The mounds and earthworks at Mound City have been recognized as significant to the interpretation of the archeological record in southern Ohio for over 100 years. Early archeological investigations by Squier and Davis (1848) brought the earthworks to the attention of the scientific community. Although the earthworks and mounds were severely damaged during the construction of Camp Sherman during World War 1, post-war excavations revealed additional archeological data that documented the significance of the site (Mills 1922; Shetrone and Spetnagel 1927). Mound City Group National Monument was established by the proclamation of President Harding (Proclamation No. 1653, March 2, 1923) to preserve and interpret the Hopewellian Culture.
