Effigy Mounds National Monument 2007
During April of 2007, Effigy Mounds National
Monument (EFMO) participated in the Midwest Archeological
Center’s fire effects study. Fire research
at EFMO contributed information about woodland
burning conditions within the region. EFMO experimental
burn plots provided data about fuel loads particular
to woodland settings, which is a key aspect to
this regional study. The fire experiments also
included tall grass prairie burns within the park
to test fire effects in a grassland setting. The
interpretation focus at EFMO is on the mounds
constructed during prehistoric times; however,
the fire study experimented not only with prehistoric
artifact types but also historic materials based
on identified historic resources located within
the unit. Knowing how prescribed fire effects
both prehistoric and historic archeological materials
at EFMO will assist park managers utilize the
prescribe fire program effectively while preserving
the important archeological resources at the park.
