The immense volume of records
and artifacts generated during
the excavations reflects the scale of
the project.
This data provides the historical archeologist
with bounteous information about the
history,
culture, and material culture of the American
bison robe trade. The size and diversity
of the archeological collection makes it
one of the world's foremost fur trade
assemblages.
The archeological data reflect Fort Union's
role as a "company town" whose
business occurred as an unique interaction
between peoples of two cultural systems.
As of 2005, three researchers are using
artifacts from Fort Union to study
quarry sources for stone tobacco pipes,
bone
buttons, and clay tobacco pipes.
