Inventory and Evaluation at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore 2007

A Midwest Archeological Center crew traveled to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (APIS) during June of 2007. This trip focused on completing a multi-year archeological evaluation and starting a new archeological inventory. MWAC staff members Jeff Richner, Dawn Bringelson, Jonathon Weiland and Dustin Gonzales enjoyed the hospitality and great assistance of many APIS personnel. Chief of Planning and Resource Management Jim Nepstad showed great support for and interest in this project. Park Ranger and Ojibwe Cultural Educator Damon Panek joined us in the field several days. Branch Chief of Cultural Resources Christy Baker was a regular member of the crew and so much help in facilitating our day-to-day activities. Finally, we are indebted to various highly skilled and dependable boat operators.

Thanks to all of these individuals, this field project succeeded in improving understanding of many archeological sites across the park, including a significant long-term Precontact site, several historic period camps, and a sandstone quarry. We look forward to more great collaboration as we continue to learn about the archeological record at APIS.
