Grand Portage National Monument 2006
During October 2006, an intrepid Midwest Archeological
Center (MWAC) crew braved the cold and snow of the North
Country at Grand Portage
National Monument (GRPO) to conduct archeological
test excavations along a new handicapped accessible
pathaway. Archeologist Jay Sturdevant and Technicians
John Gapp, Jennifer Lahowetz, and Erin Dempsey were
assisted by GRPO Resource Manager David Cooper and Biological
Technician Brandon Seitz. A special thanks to Volunteers
In Parks Al Larson, Linda Larson, and Mary Vanderpoel
for providing additional assistance, knowledge of the
fur trade, and good humor during the project. Thanks
also go to GRPO Superintendent Tim Cochrane and all
the staff who welcomed us at the park and helped make
the project a success.
