Crow Agency II Site (24ST89), Stillwater County, Montana
2006
The magnetic survey of the second Crow Agency (24ST89)
was conducted by MWAC archeologist Steven De Vore at
the request of the Montana Department of Transportation
to delineate the historic Crow Agency II boundaries
and to identify archeological resources associated with
the second Crow Agency (1875-1883). Approximate 8.3
acres were surveyed with a fluxgate gradiometer. The
resulting magnetic data provided definitive evidence
for the location of the agency compound, irrigation
ditches, trash dumps, and artifact scatters associated
with the agency buildings and activity areas. Details
of the agency complex indicated in the magnetic data
closely correspond to the existing agency map. Archeologists
from Aaberg Cultural Resource Consulting Service and
Western GeoArch Research assisted in the magnetic survey
efforts.
