Knife River Indian Villages September 2005
In September 2005, MWAC Archeologist Jay Sturdevant
assisted in conducting the second round of prescribed
fire experiments at KNRI. Three additional 20 x 20
meter blocks were burned at the Poly and Youess sites
to better understand the Fall fire conditions and impacts
to surface artifacts on medium density archeological
sites in the park.
We would like to thank North Dakota
SHPO Archeologist Paul Picha for again assisting
with the burn experiments at KNRI. His knowledge and
previous
experience with fire research has been a key component
to the succuss of this project. A special thanks
is extended to the National Park Service, Fish and
Wildlife
Service, and Forest Service personnel who conducted
the burns. These experiments would not have been
possible without their commitment to the cultural and
natural
resource programs at KNRI.
