Knife River Indian Villages April 2005
In April, MWAC Archeologists Tom Thiessen and Jay
Sturdevant conducted an experimental burn at Knife
River Indian Villages NHS to test the implications
of prescribed fire use by the park. Three 20 x 20
meter grids were tested at both the Poly and Youess
sites.
ND State Archeologist Paul Picha was also on site
to help assess the impacts of fire on the surface archeological
record. Thanks to all the NPS Fire staff who were
able
to pull-off the burn under less than ideal early
spring conditions. A special thanks is extended to
the KNRI
staff and Volunteer Terry Sturdevant for their invaluable
contributions of time and effort. This project would
have not been possible without the dedicated effort
of everyone involved.
