Mass wasting erosion of the north facing bluff
on Outer Island has encroached to almost 50 feet
from the lighthouse. Left unchecked, it is estimated
that within 10 years the bluff face would be at
the base of the Lighthouse tower, which was constructed
in 1874. This summer, Apostle
Island National Lakeshore will be installing
a drainage system on the blufftop to limit additional
erosion of bluff.
During the week of June 28, MWAC Archeologist
William Volf conducted an archeological inventory
of the area that will be disturbed by the erosion
control measures. He was assisted by APIS SCA
intern Kim Muehe
