ASMIS
The Archeological Sites Management Information
System (ASMIS) is the National Park Service's
database for the basic registration and management
of park prehistoric and historic archeological
resources. ASMIS records contain data on site
location, description, significance, condition,
threats to, and management requirements for known
park archeological sites. It serves as a tool
to support improved archeological resources preservation,
protection, planning, and decision-making by parks,
support offices, and the National Center. |

| The AIM Team at the Midwest Archeological Center
maintains the ASMIS database for most of the parks
in the Midwest Region and provides management assistance
to several parks in the Intermountain Region. Site
records are entered, updated, and reported to both
the parks and the Archeology and Ethnography Program
in the NPS Washington Office. |

|
| The ASMIS database is the result of
efforts by archeologists at MWAC to inventory and
evaluate archeological sites for their scientific,
archeological and historical significance and values,
as well as to preserve and maintain archeological
sites eligible for or listed in the National Register
of Historic Places. Maintaining such a database
also helps to preserve significant scientific, archeological
and historical data from all sites threatened with
irreparable loss, damage or destruction, and protect
all archeological sites from looting, vandalism
or unauthorized excavation or removal of artifacts. |
