During his first year as President, Washington issued the historic "General Thanksgiving" Proclamation on October 3, 1789. The decree set aside Thursday, November 26th as "A Day of Publick Thanksgiving and Prayer." While Thanksgiving was observed in America before and after Washington's proclamation, this was the first official decree setting an official day of thanks.
George Washington's annual salary as President in 1789 was $25,000.
Today's President, Bill Clinton, receives a salary of $200,000.
