Fort Sam Houston In 1879, Fort Sam Houston was the Army's regional headquarters for military operations. In 1916, when Pancho Villa's troops crossed the Mexican border into the United States, General John J. Pershing launched a campaign against them. But less than a year later, Pershing was ordered to Europe to lead the American Expeditionary Force in World War I. This operation was of vital importance to our entire nation. Between 1916 and 1918, some 208,000 men trained at two Fort Houston camps, then joined allied forces in Europe to help defeat the German army. Over the years, many well-known officers have lived in the post's attractive Commanding Officer's Quarters, but the house itself still bears the name of World War I hero. |
