Mark Twain House
Hartford, Connecticut

Mark Twain had this house built for himself and his family in 1874. While he lived here, he wrote The Adventures of Tom Sayer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and other books that have become part of our literary heritage. In 1877 a poem was published in a Hartford trade magazine that described the materials and design of Twain's house. The first stanza goes like this:

"This is the House that Mark Built.
These are the bricks of various hue
And shape and position, straight and askew
With the nooks and angles and fables too
Which make up the house presented to view
The curious house that Mark built..."
