Alliance of National Heritage Areas

The non-profit Alliance of National Heritage Areas is the association for heritage areas, organizations and individuals that supports and advocates heritage development and education nationally.

National Park Service Resources

The Discover our Shared Heritage Travel Itineraries, which feature places listed in the National Register of Historic Places, help promote visits to and a better understanding of the resources in Heritage Areas.

The Teaching with Historic Places Lesson Plans lesson plans can be used by students and teachers worldwide, regardless of whether they can make a visit to the registered historic places featured. Many lesson plans feature resources in Heritage Areas.

The Historic Landscapes Initiative promotes responsible preservation practices in a range of landscapes from formal to vernacular.

The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom a National Park Service initiatve, is a diverse collection of elements comprised of historic sites and properties, and facilities and programs that have a verifiable association to the Underground Railroad. Resources connected with the UGRR story are eligible to become partners of the Network. A database of Network and Network Partner sites is available on the website.

The Conservation Study Institute was established by the National Park Service (NPS) to help the agency and its partners stay in touch with the evolving field of conservation and develop more sophisticated partnerships and new tools and strategies.

NPS National Register for Historic Places the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation.

NPS American Battlefield Protection Program promotes the preservation of significant historic battlefields associated with wars on American soil.

NPS Heritage Preservation Services Publications A comprehensive library of technical bulletins, preservation briefs, presevation laws and standards manuals produced by the NPS that related to the treatment and preservation of historic sites and historic materials.

Preserve America Initiative an Administration initiative that encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our priceless cultural and natural heritage.

NPS Rails, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) Community Toolbox A collection of techniques for public participation that communities can use to get organized, to turn their vision into reality, to work together to improve their special places.

 

Interpretation: Connecting Visitors to Resources

South Carolina National Heritage Corridor - National Heritage Area offering wide variety of interpretation training programs.

Lackawanna Heritage Valley Ambassadors Program

National Park Service Interpretive Development Program - Provides NPS mission-based training and development curriculum, national standards for interpretive programs, peer review certification, and numerous developmental tools and resources.

National Association for Interpretation - NAI is a professional organization dedicated to advancing the profession of heritage interpretation. Members include those who work at parks, museums, nature centers, zoos, botanical gardens, aquariums, commercial tour companies, and theme parks. Commercial and institutional members include those who provide services to the heritage interpretation industry.

NPS/Eppley Institute Interpretation Training Site - Developed in partnership between the NPS and the Eppley Institute for Parks and Public Lands, the site provides on-line interpretation training modules. Continuing Education Units (CEU's) are available.

The Association of Nature Center Administrators - ANCA is a non-profit organization formed in 1989 to promote leadership and quality management for the nature center profession.

Association for Outdoor Recreation and Education - The Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE) is an organization developed by and for outdoor recreation and education professionals and students.

Association of Partners for Public Lands - Through education, information, and representation, the Association of Partners for Public Lands enhances the potential of its member not-for-profit organizations to provide the highest levels of program and service to public agencies entrusted with the care of America's natural and cultural heritage.

Association for Heritage Interpretation - AHI is a UK based forum for anyone interested in interpretation. The Association was founded in 1975 as the Society for the Interpretation of Britain's Heritage

Interpretation Canada - Interpretation Canada provides training, networking and advocacy for interpreters and promotes the value and role of interpretation.

The Heritage Education Network (THEN) is a public service project of the Center for Historic Preservation (CHP) at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
