Healthy Environment & People

| Bayou Teche is becoming one of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area’s most popular paddling destinations, spurred by a resident volunteer cleanup of the bayou. Now a designated water trail, paddlers of all ages are encouraged to explore Bayou Teche through kayak and canoe events. These events have also spurred business growth in the region. |
Preservation & Education

Wheeling National Heritage Area staff provided technical and grant management assistance on the Capitol Theatre restoration project. The Capitol Theatre is one of the largest theatres in the state of West Virginia and historically was home of the Wheeling Jamboree, the second longest running country radio program in America (second to the Grand Ole Opry). The work supported 30 construction jobs and six students learned hands on restoration. |

Economic Impacts
| A new economic impact study indicates National Heritage Areas (NHAs) contribute $12.9 billion annually to the national economy. The economic benefits of NHAs are realized primarily through tourism and visitation. Each NHA coordinating entity serves as a catalyst for economic development within the regions they operate. Read the full report for information on the six case study NHAs. |
Conservation & Sustainability
| The High Creek Fen Site Steward Pilot Program supported by South Park National Heritage Area, introduced middle school students to one of the most valuable natural resources in the heritage area, the High Creek Fen. The program brought hydrology and watershed professionals into the classroom to teach the students about water quality and healthy ecosystems. Students then went into the fen to conduct water testing associated with the World Water Monitoring Day. |
