Life Along the River

RIVER
TRADE

(image) Detail illustrating a bustling market scene.

Market at Cahokia, circa 1150-1200 AD. The wealthy drove the trading system, which saw a high demand for status symbols–jewelry and other luxury goods. Raw copper, likely from the Great Lakes, was delicately hammered into bracelets, beads, rings, ear spools, and embossed effigies of falcons and other birds of prey. Illustration by Lloyd K. Townsend. Use prohibitied without permission.
