Life Along the River

RIVER
TRADE

(image) Detail from a larger painting showing a walled Mississippian village with dozens of its citizens involved in various trade related activities.

The mound cities were in many ways like our ownľalive with commerce, industry, and development. This scene of everyday life in Cahokia, a city in what is now Illinois, was likely a common one along the Mississippi and its tributaries just a few hundred years before Columbus waded ashore in the Caribbean.
