Photo 1: Captain Penniman's House, French Second Empire style, built in 1868.

Photo 2: Atwood-Higgins House, a typical Cape Cod home.

Both houses are now preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cape Cod National Seashore.

Questions for Photo 1 & 2

1. Compare and contrast the two houses. What are some of the architectural features on the Penniman house that make it different? If needed, refer to Reading 4.

2. How would you describe the typical Cape Cod home?

3. What do you think accounts for the differences between these homes? Which house do you think might be more prevalent on Cape Cod? Why?
